Equipment Safety Policy

Geaux Cajun IT provides access to professional tools, machines, printers, fabrication equipment, and creative workspaces. Safety is required at all times.

By using any equipment at Geaux Cajun IT, you agree to follow this Equipment Safety Policy, posted instructions, staff direction, and all applicable maker space rules.

1. Training Required

Do not operate any equipment unless you have been approved by Geaux Cajun IT staff and completed the required training, certification, or supervised instruction.

Training may be required for:

  • Laser cutters and engravers
  • UV printers
  • Apparel printers
  • Sublimation equipment
  • Heat presses
  • Embroidery machines
  • CNC routers
  • Plasma cutters
  • Woodworking tools
  • Power tools
  • Finishing equipment
  • Any tool or machine designated by staff

2. Staff Direction Must Be Followed

Staff may stop any equipment use at any time if they believe there is a safety concern, machine risk, material issue, policy violation, or operational problem.

Staff instructions are final.

3. Personal Protective Equipment

Users may be required to wear personal protective equipment depending on the tool, material, or workspace. This may include:

  • Safety glasses
  • Gloves when appropriate
  • Hearing protection
  • Respiratory protection when required
  • Closed-toe shoes
  • Aprons or protective clothing
  • Hair ties or restraints for long hair

Loose clothing, jewelry, or unsecured items may be prohibited around moving equipment.

4. Approved Materials Only

Only approved materials may be used. Some materials are dangerous when cut, burned, heated, engraved, printed, or machined.

Users must not use unknown materials, PVC, vinyl, treated materials, hazardous materials, flammable materials, toxic materials, pressurized items, or any material not approved by staff.

If you are unsure what a material is, do not use it.

5. No Bypassing Safety Systems

Users may not disable, bypass, modify, override, block, remove, or tamper with any safety system, ventilation system, interlock, guard, shield, filter, emergency stop, warning sign, lockout device, or equipment setting.

6. Stay With Active Equipment

Users must remain near active equipment unless staff specifically allows otherwise.

Never leave laser cutters, heat presses, CNC machines, plasma equipment, printers, or other active equipment unattended.

7. Fire Safety

Some equipment creates heat, sparks, smoke, fumes, or fire risk. Users must follow all fire safety instructions.

Stop immediately and notify staff if you see smoke, flame, unusual odor, overheating, sparking, machine error, abnormal sound, or material failure.

8. Report Problems Immediately

Report broken tools, damaged cords, machine errors, unusual sounds, unsafe conditions, missing parts, clogged ventilation, spills, burns, injuries, or near-misses immediately.

Do not attempt unauthorized repair.

9. Clean Up After Use

Users must clean equipment, work surfaces, debris, dust, residue, scraps, and materials after use.

Failure to clean may result in cleaning fees or loss of access.

10. No Impaired Use

No person may use equipment while impaired by alcohol, drugs, medication, fatigue, illness, distraction, or any condition that affects safe operation.

11. Damage and Liability

Users may be responsible for equipment damage, broken tools, contaminated machines, material waste, fire damage, or repair costs caused by misuse, negligence, unauthorized use, or failure to follow instructions.

12. Access May Be Revoked

Geaux Cajun IT may suspend or revoke equipment access at any time for safety concerns, misuse, repeated mistakes, failure to clean up, failure to follow policy, or staff discretion.
